I Feel The Need, The Need For Top Gun Day

Certain holidays are for the dogs, especially when you learn that Boxer Day doesn't celebrate Mike Tyson and Flag Day has nothing to do with a nationwide capture the flag tournament. Fortunately there are lots of good holidays too, like the 4th of July and Talk Like A Pirate Day. Well you might not be aware but today is actually one of those amazing holidays. It's time to put on some aviators and set the Kenny Loggins to full blast, Happy Top Gun Day!

The official website of this powerful holiday answers the how to participate question.

  1. On May 13th update your social network profile picture / avatar to be anything Top Gun related. Use an image from our photo gallery or get creative and make your own. If you do make your own we’d love it if you could share it with us. If it’s good we’ll post it to our user gallery so other people can use it.
  2. Use as many Top Gun lines throughout the day as possible. For example, say your friend Jim asks you what you’re doing on Friday night, you should respond: “Hey Jim, you stink”.
  3. Wear aviator sunglasses. Cheap or expensive. Inside or out. Just don’t “Scratch one”!
  4. Grab your Top Gun Day T-Shirt and “CALL THE BALL!”
  5. Go to a bar…wearing a flight suit or aviator wings and order a glass of Hemlock.
  6. Call your friends and tell them, “I’m going to Top Gun!” and then hangup.
  7. Buy some rubber dog shit.
  8. Don’t wear deodorant and only respond to the name, Slider.
  9. Join us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!

Use your imagination, there is NO wrong way to participate. If Slider can do it, so can you.

No idea how they don't mention Loggins or the ridiculously amazing soundtrack but that is clearly mandatory listening on Top Gun Day. Did I mention how much I love Kenny Loggins? That's right, but I held something back. I see some real genius in your flying, Kenny, but I can't say that in here. I was afraid that everyone on the interwebs would see right through me, and I just don't want anyone to know that I've fallen for you.

Synopsis:
Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber. In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job. Assembling an elite team of experts—Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)—MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

It's worth noting that director Jorma Taccone is the guy responsible for almost all of the funny digital shorts that have come from Saturday Night Live over the last few years.  I think a lot of people are expecting/hoping this bombs like a lot of the past SNL adaptations but the tone in the trailer makes me think it might be a sneaky good one like Hot Rod.  That movie is amazing.
