Awesome Thoughts On The 2010 Oscar Nominees

Way earlier than anyone on the west coast should be awake, Anne Hathaway and some academy dude announced the 2010 Oscar nominees this morning.  Set to take place Sunday March 7th, this year's telecast has the added bonus of featuring two hosts that might actually add some funny to the festivities, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.  Luckily Mosa already filled you in on the details.

As for the nominations there were not too many surprises in there but I had a few thoughts for your digesting, just make sure you are done before you remember The Blind Side was nominated for Best Picture.  What better way than to kill this tragedy than will bullet points.

  • Has there ever been an ex-husband vs. ex-wife showdown in any category ever at the Oscars?  Certainly not as amazing as King of the World Avatar director James Cameron and the woman, Kathryn Bigelow, that actually directed the best movie of the year, The Hurt Locker.
  • While on Avatar I have an honest question.  Is the judging supposed to be done based on the film or the experience?  More importantly is this specified in the rules?  Or do we have half of the voters basing their vote on the experience and the other half basing it on how well it holds up on a DVD at home?  Personally I think it should be based on the experience, and if it is, Avatar should win.

Synopsis:
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

After all the hype that has been lumped on to Avatar as a game changer in the film industry, I must say it still manages to look incredibly awesome. Add in to this the fact that this is just a teaser, and Cameron, while a tad self-righteous, is a damn fine filmmaker. I can't wait to get my eyes and mind on this mania for real. What are your thoughts about Avatar?

James Cameron Announces Avatar Day During Comic Con Panel

After showing "around 24 minutes" worth of Avatar at Comic Con, James Cameron ended the panel by announcing something unprecedented. According to the liveblog from the panel done by the awesome site Joblo.com

They're taking over as many IMAX 3D theaters plus selected 3D theaters on August 21 and let a global audience come to see 15 minutes of AVATAR for free!
AVATAR Day they're calling it. They'll also release the video game trailer and the toys.

Everything I've read indicates Avatar is going to change the future of film. Pretty lofty stuff. I'm very excited, and will definitely be heading to an IMAX theater on August 21.

We'll keep you updated on any other major announcements but you can follow the Comic Con mania in much greater detail at the respectively awesome movie blogs www.joblo.com , www.slashfilm.com or www.cinematical.com

Avatar to Change World One IMAX3D Theater at a Time

Sometimes I think James Cameron is a pompous piece of shit, but he is also a talented pompous piece of shit. And truth be told I have never met him and he actually seems kind of cool whenever I see footage of him. His newest project Avatar has some ambition behind it, only to change the way movies are made forever. Fox and IMAX announced that the film will be released simultaneously in IMAX 3D, like duh.

"Our goal with Avatar is to revolutionize live-action 3-D movie-making, and I have no doubt that it will look and sound incredible in IMAX 3-D," Cameron said. "The larger field of view and power surround sound of an IMAX theatre will completely immerse the audience in a way that cannot be experienced anywhere else."

He later added off the record, "It's the visual version of the brown sound, if you know what I mean". The movie is about some ex-marine in the middle of some fighting on some weird alien planet.

As an Avatar -- a human mind in an alien body -- he finds himself torn between two worlds, fighting for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.

There is no doubt that James Cameron is a masterful story teller, and a visionary. Add in "groundbreaking techniques" and throw it in Cameron's scifi wheelhouse and it seems you have a surefire hit. A couple weeks ago Jon Favreau said he saw an early cut and it is the future of movies. Sounds good to me, a hope for change!

Here is the (really good) teaser trailer.
