Up In The Air

Awesome Thoughts On The 2010 Oscar Nominees

Way earlier than anyone on the west coast should be awake, Anne Hathaway and some academy dude announced the 2010 Oscar nominees this morning.  Set to take place Sunday March 7th, this year's telecast has the added bonus of featuring two hosts that might actually add some funny to the festivities, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.  Luckily Mosa already filled you in on the details.

As for the nominations there were not too many surprises in there but I had a few thoughts for your digesting, just make sure you are done before you remember The Blind Side was nominated for Best Picture.  What better way than to kill this tragedy than will bullet points.

  • Has there ever been an ex-husband vs. ex-wife showdown in any category ever at the Oscars?  Certainly not as amazing as King of the World Avatar director James Cameron and the woman, Kathryn Bigelow, that actually directed the best movie of the year, The Hurt Locker.
  • While on Avatar I have an honest question.  Is the judging supposed to be done based on the film or the experience?  More importantly is this specified in the rules?  Or do we have half of the voters basing their vote on the experience and the other half basing it on how well it holds up on a DVD at home?  Personally I think it should be based on the experience, and if it is, Avatar should win.

Precious, Basterds Lead Screen Actors Guild Nominations

I always have enjoyed the Screen Actor's Guild Awards for some weird reason.  Something something people applauding their own profession, blah blah blah.  Anyhoo, they recently announced this years nominees.

Based on the films I have seen so far and what I've read about the performances in the films I have yet to see this looks like a pretty good list.  You might be wondering why I'm not complaining about the inclusion of Precious in the SAG Awards version of Best Picture, but to be fair it is Outstanding Performance by a Cast, which works as both Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique deserve the accolades their performances have garnered, the movie just isn't Best Picture quality.  I'm talking to you Golden Globes.

The SAG Awards are set to air on TNT and TBS on January 23rd.  You can check out the complete list of nominees, which includes the television stuff, after the jump.

The nominees for the 2010 Golden Globe Awards were announced today.  Jason Reitman's George Clooney starring Up In The Air leads all films with 6 nominations while the Rob Marshall ensemble musical Nine clocks in with five nominations of its own, granted that probably has a lot to do with the Globe's separate category for comedy or musical. All the nominees for the film categories are listed below For the official news release including the television nominees, head over to the official Golden Globes site.

Synopsis:
From Jason Reitman, the Oscar® nominated director of “Juno,” comes a comedy called “Up in the Air” starring Oscar® winner George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he’s met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams.

In general I think Thank You For Smoking and Juno are two extremely well made films.  The Jason Reitman experience is a fun one so far, and from the looks of this trailer it is only getting better.  While I am usually against the trailer being built around interior monologue, I have to admit it works for me here.  This role looks like a walk in the park for Clooney, but luckily he doesn't take many roles lightly.  What are your thoughts?
