Fishman Gets Buff For First Leg Of Phish's Summer Tour

In what is unquestionably their greatest announcement video to date, Phish has revealed the dates for the first leg of their summer tour. Aside from a three night stop at Atlantic City's Bader Field, there are no other first time venues, granted this part of tour usually covers a bunch of the band's favorite haunts. The ticket lottery is currently underway with the official onsales taking place March 16th and 17th. As per the now standard tradition, additional dates for the summer tour, which you can safely assume should have a somewhat west coast bias, will be announced in the spring. Rock.

To enter the lottery up until March 12th at 11:59 am EST head over to Phish Tickets. For details on the Bader Field shows the band has set up one of their quirky info pages here.

Enjoy Summer Tour!

Ten Songs Phish Should Cover This Summer

Today should be a national holiday and if you're one of the lucky people in the world that celebrate all things Phish I'm sure you're treating it as such with summer tour set to start later this evening in Bethel, New York. Tonight will mark the band's first show since their New Year's Day gig earlier this year, so with all that time off surely we can expect some tricks inhabitting the upper regions of various sleeves. With thirty dates on the docket for the summer, and the foreboding declaration of no plans for fall tour, it's safe to assume the band will come out guns blazing, granted I'm an unabashed apologist so it always feels like that to me. Either way I made a list of ten songs I think Misters Anastasio, Fishman, Gordon and McConnell should cover on their cross-country adventure complete with the closest I could get to a live version of the original on youtube. Enjoy then call me names and tell me how stupid some of the choices were in the comments section below.

"Coconut" - Harry Nilsson

The great Harry Nilsson is pretty much the whole reason I even started this list as he needs to be covered more and "Coconut" was born to either segue in or out of Bathtub Gin, much like a silly grinning jester. Let the jamming commence.

"Mixed Bizness" - Beck

For my money Midnite Vultures is the best thing Beck has ever done, and in my mind it is probably the last album he did before he went full blown Scientologist, granted I have no knowledge whatsoever of that being the case. That being said it's easy to say "Mixed Bizness" is the funnest song on the album, especially in this context as I don't really want Trey to take me out to Glendale, or show me a really good meal for that matter. The main groove would have the aisles dancing to put it mildly.

"Gonna Blow Your Mind" - The Commodores

Phish Announce Labor Day Shows In Colorado To Close Tour

The long rumored Phish shows at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado over Labor Day weekend are now official. The three night weekend stand, which will take place a little over two weeks after the last dates on their itinerary, are being billed as "the last announced by the band for the Summer and Fall", so for those needing the last bit of a fix until a hopeful New Year's run this is all you've got. Well of course there's those other two legs of tour including a wonderfully scenic west coast run, but this is where it ends.

For all the complaining Phish fans do about awkward tour routing and bias, it's worth noting the opportunities the band has presented to their fans for a weekend of Phishing. The tour is bookended by holiday weekends that feature three night stands while the band took the one major summer holiday and made it Superball IX. It's safe to assume the Labor Day weekend events won't feature ferris wheels and the like, but the Colorado dates do offer onsite camping on "the lush soccer fields adjacent to the stadium". Replace soccer with polo and you have the exact Festival 8 camping description. If it goes down that smoothly we're all in for quite a weekend.

The lottery is currently underway for the newly announced shows through Phish ticketing and will conclude at noon EST on Monday, May 23rd.

Phish Offer Up Live In Utica Preview With A Tease Heavy "David Bowie"

It's great being a Phish fan, especially if you like seemingly semi-annual official dvd releases. The latest bit of recorded goodness comes in the form of Live In Utica which features the band's complete performance from their visit to the Utica Memorial Auditorium on October 20th, 2010. If you like really great setlists and exciting playing this one is a doozy, which is why the preview of "David Bowie" is so perfect. The fourteen plus minute version lets you in on just how much fun the boys were having that night, none moreso than Trey who goes above and beyond his usual puppeteer measures with some serious "Guyute" and "Wilson" teases. Summer can't get here soon enough.

Pre-orders are currently underway over at Dry Goods that will include the bonus cd compilation Phish: I-90's, which "follows the band along the I-90 New York Thruway". Live In Utica is scheduled to hit stores on May 24th. Amazingly there are still tickets left for many of Phish's upcoming summer tour dates, except for Leg II which pretty much sold out in the blink of a salamander. Note to Phish: the west coast loves you, promise. Head on over to the official site for more details.

Outside Lands 2011 Lineup Features Phish, Arcade Fire, Muse

The lineup for this year's Outside Lands festival is here! Celebrate good times come on, although that should not suggest Kool & the Gang made the cut, granted they certainly should have. Helping the festival move back to the proper three day variety is a solid core of headliners featuring the greatest rock band on the planet Phish, already confirmed to be playing two sets on Friday night, Muse who are rumored to be holding down Saturday night's headlining festivities, and the third night theoretically being split between almost-headliners-but-not-really Arcade Fire and The Black Keys. A solid start if I don't say so myself, granted I just did, but that's why you're here, right? Literal wordplay? Oh, the lineup. Yeah, let's get to that.

Joining in on the fun in Golden Gate Park August 12-14 will be a lot of people who have never been in my kitchen, more specifically Deadmau5, Girl Talk, Big Boi, Erykah Badu, Beirut, Big Audio Dynamite, as well as Bay Area legend/fake southerner John Fogerty. Of course there are some SHA favorites mixed in there as well such as MGMT, Lotus, Mavis Staples, The Decemberists, The Meters, The Roots, The Infamous Stringdusters, The Joy Formidable, The Stone Foxes and four more bands that start with "The". What can we say, we love the article-noun naming convention.

Other notable acts include Arctic Monkeys, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The Warren Haynes Band (who I'm hoping don't play until Sunday so as to guarantee no Warren sit-in mid-Phish), Toro Y Moi and many more. Tickets go on sale starting this Thursday April 14th and there are varying pricing scales so the early birds get the proverbial worm here with savings! Straight cash homey.

Mike Gordon Announces March Tour Dates

Not to be outdone by his Phish bandmate Trey Anastasio, our favorite purple pants wearing bassist Mike Gordon just announced an eighteen date cross-country tour this coming March in support of his most recent release Moss. Interestingly enough Cactus will start his tour on the west coast the same day Trey is rocking San Francisco to close out his tour. Happy times for the west coast.

As per usual Mike will be joined by Scott Murawski on guitar, Craig Myers on percussion, Tom Cleary on keyboards and Brooklyn drummer Todd Isler. While you're not just going to see random dudes jamming along onstage, it looks to be a magical affair. Get it, because there's magic in the video. A real time presale is currently underway over at Mike Gordon Tickets.

Phish Welcome In 2011 With A Multi-Cultural Meatstick

Best Meatstick ever. This is sort of like the Phish version of "It's A Small World", granted with real people instead of small miniatures and a hot dog vessel as opposed to a boat. Either way it rules. I won't do too much spoiling as the surprise and actions make up quite a bit of fun but this is how Phish spent the moments before midnight on New Year's Eve in the middle of their recent MSG run. I love how Trey can't keep his guitar off for Auld Lang Syne. Happy New Year's Chuck Norris and friends.

Phish To Offer Pay Per View Streams Of New Year's MSG Run

For those of us not lucky enough to be attending Phish's New Year's run at Madison Square Garden, today is a very good day as the band has announced plans to stream all three shows live. The full run will set you back $39.99 with the individual prices varying between $14.99 for Dec 30th and Jan 1st or the special New Year's Eve performance for $19.99. Not exactly dirt cheap but certainly a reasonable rate for what should be some fantastic shows.

Obviously the most exciting aspect at play here is Phish breaking the seal on streaming considering they professionally film all the shows anyway. The iClips route that many bands have used for streaming in the past always came with a limited archive of the show to catch if you missed parts live, unfortunately that alternative will not exist for the Phish shows. Not sure how that's really a deal breaker though. Here's to hoping the future of Phish couch tour is a successful one.

For technical specifications and any other questions you may have head over to the Live Phish FAQ. You can also check out the YEM>Piper from their August 15th appearance at Alpine Valley to test your streaming capabilities. Good times.  [via hidden track]

Music Video Of The Day: Phish - Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan

Here's the latest preview from Phish's upcoming Alpine Valley 2010 release. A near six minute "Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan" that is part of the bonus material from the August 15th show, as opposed to the featured August 14th show that is included in its entirety. The 2 DVD/2CD set will be released on December 14th. Orders made through Dry Goods will receive a bonus Phish:Wisconsin Edition cd featuring highlights from the fellas past appearances at the famed venue. Good stuff.

Phish Announce New Alpine Valley 2010 Box Set

Less than a month after the release of their Coral Sky DVD, the awesome that is Phish have announced a new DVD release, the first to capture what fans have labeled Phish 3.0. Taken  from their latest two night stand at the legendary Alpine Valley Music Theatre, the 2 DVD, 2 CD box set features the complete August 14th, 2010 performance as well as some bonus highlights from the following night's show. As anyone who has attended one of the more recent gigs can attest to, the pesky cameramen have been put to good use as this new format lends a distinctly intimate vibe that is sometimes missing from past releases. For our first bit of evidence I offer up the set's "Reba" below.

The Alpine Valley 2010 box set will be available December 14th. You can pre-order all the Alpine Valley 2010 related goodies over at Phish Dry Goods, which will get you a free bonus CD Phish: Wisconsin Edition featuring highlights spanning the fourteen years of Phish performances at the venue.
