The New Pornographers Music Video/Biopic Moves Needs To Happen

There's a lot to like about The New Pornographers' new music video for "Moves" off of their 2010 release Together, whether it's seeing Ted Leo dressed in drag, the anti-Canadian rally or fake AC Newman's recruitment note. Directed by Tom Scharpling the video acts more as a trailer for a fake movie about the band's rise to glory and subsequent rise after that, even with Horatio Sanz doing mountains of cocaine. With all that awesome it's hard to believe that a five second preview from another fake movie at the beginning still might steal all of "Moves" thunder. Not so much so if you had read the amazing synopsis for Expectant Dads prior.

Nick (Paul Rudd) and D-Bomb (Bill Hader) are two carefree and crazy guys trying to make their mark in the highly competitive world of extreme coin collecting, otherwise known as “X-Coining”. They’ve been at it for years without a lot of success, and they’re both at the end of their respective ropes – D-Bomb’s wife (Melissa Joan Hart) is going to throw him out of the house if he doesn’t get a serious job by New Year’s Day, and Nick’s father Big Nick (Danny Aiello) is going to cut him out of the family’s inheritance from selling their toilet seat factory.

But the two dudes bite off way more than they can chew when they battle with two rival X-Coiners (Andy Milonakis and Robert Blake, Jr.) who trick Nick and D-Bomb into ingesting a chemical (distributed by way of a pot vaporizer called “King Vidor Vapor”) that makes them both pregnant. And if that wasn’t enough, the boys are under the impression that they were impregnated by a pair of weightlifters during a pre-match oil session!

So Nick and D-Bomb set off to Sin City to catch up with the men they believe to be the fathers of their children, coming across all kinds of ridiculous adventures along the way! EXPECTANT DADS is anything but the expected, but you can expect all kinds of laughs and thrills during this exciting 160 minute thrill ride!

Expectant Dads clearly sounds like the best movie ever right? Cast Tony Danza as twin brothers that are the respective fathers and I think we are talking Oscar, a Golden Globe nomination at the very least. Good times.

Also 160 minute thrill ride!

Sacha Baron Cohen Set To Star As Freddie Mercury

This story should get all nerd boners to full mast, much like your mom after her nightly feeding. Not sure that came out right. Either way looks like Hollywood might have accidentally gone and done some awesome as Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to star as legendary Queen frontman and bicycle aficionado Freddie Mercury, with historical screenwriter extraordinaire Peter Morgan set to write the script.

Put on some stretch pants and hit some incredibly high notes Deadline:

GK’s King confirmed the Queen deal: “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself,” he said in a statement. “Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”

This is the first time the surviving members of Queen--Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon--have licensed songs and music publishing rights for a movie about the band and they formed Queen Films to be part of the production team on the film.

Well then, this project sounds about as promising as a film with no director can. Some might be scared of Cohen's mostly ridiculous resume but it's worth noting his success is based on his incredible ability to completely inhabit a character, which is utterly necessary for any chance of success at playing a persona as strong as Mercury's. The film's script is said to focus on the band's formative years leading up to their Live Aid performance in 1985 which you can catch some of below.

The Fighter

The jokes sort of write themselves with this one. Marky Mark was literally born to play this part, and I never thought I'd say that about anything that doesn't involve Dirk Diggler. Bale looks certifiably loony in his bits here as Dicky Eklund which should be a nice changeup from his usual role as the generic male lead post Batman Begins. For all intensive purposes this is director Russell's follow-up to 2004's I Heart Huckabees and while the mood will certainly be different, let's hope the end result of a quality film isn't. From the looks of things that shouldn't be a worry.

Synopsis:
From acclaimed director David O. Russell comes The Fighter, the powerful true story of professional boxers Dickie (Bale) and Micky (Wahlberg). Although they are half brothers, their careers take very different courses. Older brother Dickie does not suffer from a shortage of talent or confidence, but his lack of judgment and humility lead him down a path of self-destruction. After blowing his shot against one of the greatest fighters of his generation, Dickie descends down a dangerous road of drug addiction that robs him of his career, alienates his brother, and eventually lands him in jail. Meanwhile, discouraged from yet another defeat, younger brother Micky, whose talent never seems to match the size of his heart, vanishes into early retirement. But his itch to fight never goes away, and when a rehabilitated Dickie is released from prison and takes over as Micky’s trainer, Micky transforms himself from an underdog into a world champion prized pugilist.

Randall Miller To Direct Dennis Wilson Biopic The Drummer

There haven't been too many movie updates to the site recently because I sort of got tired of writing about remakes of movies I liked when I was a kid, but we're inching towards the good part of the year, a new PTA film looms on the horizon, and there's some legitimately super hella awesome news floating around the interwebs today. Jody Savin and Randall Miller recently announced a new film called The Drummer about one of my favorite people ever. Here's the synopsis currently listed on IMDB.

The Drummer is the story of this inimitably talented but perennially disparaged man, the only true surfer of The Beach Boys and one of the truly original voices in Rock & Roll history. Intimate and personal, the story tracks the last six years of Beach Boys drummer's life, the younger brother to front man Brian, as he evolves into a creative force. Dennis Wilson digs his way out from under the shadow of his tyrannical father, corrals the demons and harnesses the will to tap his own artistry in order to create the critically applauded Pacific Ocean Blue. The film starts in the midst of The Beach Boys' fame and follows Dennis' journey, replete with decadence, drugs, love and tragedy. Despite Dennis' fall into drugs and alcohol, ultimately it is his music and his uniquely magnanimous spirit that endures.

This is just really great news. Brian will always be the "genius" of the Wilson boys, and Carl is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, but Dennis had quite a bit more musical ability than he is often credited with and it's nice to see someone hopefully bringing that to the masses. Pacific Ocean Blue is an often overlooked gem, and it recently received the reissue treatment along with the inclusion of Wilson's previously unreleased follow up Bambu.

Unfortunately like so many others, Dennis Wilson fell prey to his demons. At the age of 39 he drowned in Marina Del Rey harbor after a day of drinking back in 1983. As if that wasn't tragic enough Wilson is reported to have jumped in the water to retrieve some possessions he had thrown overboard from his boat a few years before. The good news is it seems like Miller, who directed 2008's Bottle Shock, has a good grasp of his subject.

"Dennis was a pained and tortured soul, yet brilliant and loved dearly by so many who knew him," says Miller. "This film has the makings of a tour-de-force performance in the hands of the right actor. As a director, I search for stories that expose the soul of a character in new territories that excite me as a filmmaker."

Secretariat

Interesting.  It looks likes my original fears of getting a bit too Disney'd seem to be in play here. That being said I think the film still has potential as long as you can chalk up the schmaltz to pandering to a bigger audience. Director Randall Wallace wrote Braveheart so that should get some extra cool kid points too or something.

Also Malkovich dressing like Superfly.

Synopsis:
Based on the impossible true story, SECRETARIAT chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (DIANE LANE) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (JOHN MALKOVICH)—manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.

Darren Aronofsky To Direct Rachel Weisz In Jackie Kennedy Biopic

Looks like biopics are the new remakes as it certainly feels like I've been reporting on them quite a bit.  Pretty soon we're going to have a biopic of a celebrity played by that same celebrity, featuring a soundtrack with the celebrity actually singing, produced by T Bone Burnett of course.  Either way I'm guessing that this new Jackie Kennedy biopic will not have much singing as it is said to focus exclusively on the day's after the JFK assassination up until his burial.  Don't worry, no one is trying to capitalize on tragedy here.

The film is based on a spec script by Noah Oppenheim and will reportedly follow Kennedy during the four days between her husband infamous assassination and his burial, providing a new perspective to the story in showing the beloved Kennedy "at both her most vulnerable and her most graceful."

Titled "Jackie," the project was previously linked to Steven Spielberg and HBO however Aronofsky and Scott Franklin are now putting it together through their Protozoa Pictures shingle with CAA currently shopping it around major studios. The film will potentially be Aronofsky's first collaboration with Weisz since 2006's "The Fountain" and will be an interesting turn for the director, marking his first film about on a real life figure.   [via the playlist]

Aside from Hollywood regurgitating the same formulas over and over (remakes, biopics, romantic comedies, oh my) they can't spend any time coming up with an actual title either.  Jackie, Namath, Hoover, come on now.  Aronofsky is one of the best out there, Weisz is always outstanding, and the subject matter obviously will be of interest to movie goers, especially those that were alive during those tragic times.  Considering what the director's last character piece did for Mickey Rourke, and the respect many have for Jackie Kennedy, I wouldn't be shocked to see Aronofsky's real life fiance, the previously mentioned Weisz, take home a Best Actress Oscar.

Weird Al Got His Own Biopic And It Looks Awesome

Sadly this isn't one of the real movies that is being made.  Maybe if it could somehow be CGI and 3D, but until then it will just have to be a clever Funny Or Die video where Olivia Wilde plays Madonna.  In a lot of ways this Weird Al Yankovic biopic was lifted directly from my dreams as he spends about as much time in there as the aformentioned Wilde.  Good times.   [via filmdrunk]

Tobey Maguire To Play Bobby Fischer In Pawn Sacrifice

Deadline is reporting that Tobey Maguire will star in the upcoming Bobby Fischer biopic Pawn Sacrifice.  The film will be directed by the awesome David Fincher based on a script by Steven Knight, who wrote Eastern Promises and will also be writing the script for the upcoming Robert Kennedy biopic starring Matt Damon.  The film is set to cover Fischer's life story up until the 1972 World Chess Championships where he defeated Russian Boris Spassky in what was essentially a real life Rocky IV Cold War battle

I can understand the decision to only go up until that moment of his life, but I'm not the biggest fan of the decision.  For those that are unfamiliar, calling Bobby Fischer quirky would be the understatement of the millenium.  Along with his ascension in the chess ranks came an insatiable ego, paranoia, and all the other fun stuff that happens with the cliched "troubled genius".  In a lot of ways you could say everything went downhill after the 1972 Championships eventually leading to a time where Fischer is living oversees as an anti-semitic and anti-American fugitive from the United States, which in turn led to him famously celebrating the 9/11 attacks as "what goes around comes around".

Up until his death in 2008 Fischer continued to live his life in seclusion while unrelenting on his hatred towards the United States.  It always seemed to me that Fischer clearly had some serious mental issues that, had he been born 40 years later, would have been classified and quite possibly quelled well before his life of seclusion.  At the same time all the analysis and subsequent attempts at behavior modification could quite possibly have changed the entire course of his historic chess career.

I guess that career, which could be argued was either the cause or escape from his possible insanity, will be the only focus here, as it was in his life.  We'll keep you updated.

Clint Eastwood To Direct J Edgar Hoover Biopic

If I was into cats, which I'm not, I would definitely consider Clint Eastwood the cat's meow.  Anytime there is news of a new Eastwood project I get a little pep in my step and usually start breakdancing.  It's still a bit early in the morning for breakdancing but my downstairs neighbors can attest to me breaking out the worm this morning.  Adding to the excitement is the fact that this project is about the uber controversial and slightly insane J Edgar Hoover.

Eastwood is teaming with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment on the pic, which was initially set up at Universal, where Imagine has been developing it. Dustin Lance Black, who wrote biopic "Milk," penned the script.

Hoover was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935 and turned it into an efficient crimefighting organization. He remained its director until his death in 1972, but his sculpted persona was already coming apart at the seams; he employed the FBI to harass political activists and used illegal methods to make secret files on leaders. Many biographies also assert the man was a closeted homosexual and cross-dresser.

The Hoover project isn't set up at a studio, though it will most likely end up at Warner Bros., where Eastwood and his Malpaso shingle are based, as a Malpaso-Imagine production. Malpaso's Robert Lorenz also would serve as a producer in addition to Eastwood and Grazer.  [via thr]

I try to like most people but I have a severe distaste for J Edgar Hoover.  Aside from being a corrupt self-loather, he was also prominently involved in the career of douche nozzle Joseph McCarthy, not to mention essentially waged war against my all time favorite person Charlie Chaplin.  I'm hoping Clint is looking at this as a way to enlighten the world to the dangerous aspects that Hoover brought into the American government, as opposed to the standard dramatic fare where we are "peeling the layers off a troubled and misunderstood soul".

Billy Crudup just played Hoover in Michael Mann's Public Enemies, but this role will be a lot more substantial, as it appears we will be covering a much wider range of history.  Normally I'd take this as an opportunity to suggest Tony Danza for the role but I figured Hoover would have thought Danza was a communist so we'll skip that.  Phillip Seymour Hoffman anybody?  Bueller?  Bueller?

Also, check out this "communist".  God he is awesome.  Weird how everything still applies from a speech in a 1940 movie.  That's some good writing.

Matt Damon Eyes Robert F Kennedy Biopic

Fresh off his turn as real life rugby star Francois Pienaar in last year's Invictus, it appears Matt Damon may once again be playing a historical icon, this time of the American variety.  Unfortunately it seems like we would still be dealing with a heavy accent.  Mike Fleming of Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Damon has signed on for an untitled Robert F Kennedy project.

I've just heard that a deal closed at New Regency for an RFK film that has Damon attached, with Gary Ross directing and Steven Knight scripting. Damon will wait to see the script before we know whether or not the project will really happen. The film will be based on the Evan Thomas biography His Life, which Landscape Entertainment’s Bob Cooper optioned and will produce with Ross and his Larger Than Life partner Alison Thomas.  [via deadline hollywood]

Those that have followed this blog for any amount of time can attest to the fact that I'm a pretty big fan of Damon's work.  Mostly because it's almost always good and that he makes interesting choices.  Ross wrote and directed Seabiscuit as well as the fantastic Pleasantville, so we're not talking chump change in the director's chair either.  Hell, the man wrote Big, Mr. Baseball, and Dave over a five year stretch.  That is some damn fine work.

Of course this is a long way from production but considering the pieces involved and the story they are trying to tell I can't imagine too much getting in the way.  We will keep you updated.
