Kevin Smith's new film Cop Out hits theaters this weekend but that doesn't mean he's not thinking about future projects. In a recent interview with NHL.com, Smith let loose some more specific plans for his Hit Somebody project.
Smith revealed exclusively to NHL.com that Seann William Scott, who worked with Smith on "Cop Out," will play Buddy, the title character in "Hit Somebody." The script, based on a Warren Zevon song with lyrics by acclaimed writer Mitch Albom, is a story of a hockey enforcer who strives to score just one goal in a hockey game.
"Seann, for me, was the key into the character," Smith told NHL.com. "I had all the elements in place, and the one thing I was missing was the personality. Generally I like to write to a voice, but I didn't know who that voice was or what that voice could be. And then after spending all the time with Seann on this movie, he's pitch perfect. He is that guy.
"This dude has something in him that you can just see hangs so well on Buddy. He's got some pain that's going to work out well. More importantly he has so much love in his heart. Seann Scott is such an ebullient, happy person who's just happy to be there. And on ("Cop Out") you could see it. On our set the guy is just so delighted to be working, to be making people laugh. But he's always dismissed as Stifler. … This is his chance to shine." [via nhl.com]
I actually don't mind this idea. For one Seann William Scott looks like a hockey enforcer in a certain light. For two I don't think he's that bad. The problem with Scott's career to me has been that he was just so damn good as Stifler that nobody was willing to take a chance on him in a totally different role, and on top of that everyone that was looking for a ridiculous role like Stifler was thinking of Scott. As a conosseur of bad films, I have even caught most of his performances, and in most cases the movie was the problem, not the performance. Having no real data to base it on, I don't see why he can't mimic a Vince Vaughn type career. Obviously the comedy is his bread and butter at the time being but I don't see any reason he can't be stretched.
Even as the most ardent Kevin Smith supporter I know, it is hard for me to get too excited about Kevin Smith's latest film Cop Out. I just have a lot of trouble finding the humor in Tracy Morgan and the clips and trailers I have seen aren't making me think that this is the time I will finally find Morgan funny. Sadly I'm more excited for the film's box office competition, a film about a time machine that just so happens to be a hot tub. Hopefully they are both awesome. [via the playlist]
