Haiku Reviews: Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

I've seen this one before

Guy gets framed then flees, returns

Cue obvious twist

Super powers fine

But why no super monsters

Try to keep it real?

Gyllenhaal not great

The sands of time go real slow

And nowhere really

No need for sequel

Story is boring and old

Too soon to reboot?

Awesome Super Mario Bros Crossover Has Mega Man, Link, And A Contra

This is some incredibly addicting game called Super Mario Bros. Crossover with the twist being that you can play the original game with a wide assortment of different old school characters from the 8 bit universe. Best of all the characters maintain most of their attributes from their respective game, so Link has a sword and mega men shoots balls.  That's what she said. Here's the creator's thoughts.

This is my first game, and I have worked on it for over a year. It has been a long journey, but I think you will see that all of my effort has paid off. I have recreated the entire game of Super Mario Bros, but now you can play as different characters. Each character plays just like they do in their original games with a few modifications to make the experience better.

This is my tribute to classic NES games, and anyone who grew up playing Nintendo should enjoy it. Now please enjoy the hell out of this game and experience Super Mario Bros in a whole new way!

And yes, I know that controlling Simon Belmont in the air isn't easy, but that's what makes him special. And he can double jump to help you control it a bit more. ;)

I highly recommend playing this with a gamepad if you have one, but you can still enjoy it with a keyboard.  [via newgrounds]

Unfortunately I don't have a gamepad, or really know what is being referred to but it works just fine with the keyboard. Either way I've spent way more time than I should have playing this already today. The game is posted after the jump because it plays some sound automatically, but I would strongly suggest clicking through if you like totally awesome time wasting video games.  Enjoy.   [via popwatch]

Old Video Game Characters Destroy New York In The Awesome Short Pixels

Our second awesome short post, clearly that makes this official.  I wonder if I should buy the awesome shorts a promise ring or something.  Anyhoo, this week's selection is Patrick Jean's short film Pixels, which tells the story of a bunch of retro video game characters destroying New York City one pixel at a time.  It's really just a big bad smörgåsbord of awesome, especially if you like video games and or amazing animation.

There's not a ton of info out there about the project but it appears it is somehow involved with the French group One More Production.  If you're into this stuff you might want to check out their website for some other cool videos, granted I don't think any of the other ones feature Donkey Kong.   [via all bets are off]

Awesome Stuff: iCade - An Arcade Cabinet For iPads

Well then, I guess I actually will have to be getting one of those iPad thingy majingies.  How awesome is this?

Enter the iCade iPad Arcade Cabinet! To use the iCade, gently slide the iPad into the docking cradle. The docking cradle uses a standard 30 pin connector to link the iPad to the professional-grade arcade controls. Once the iPad is in place, launch the iCade App (available free in the App Store April 3rd) and it's game on! We didn't want to take any chances you'd run out of juice during your favorite game, so we included a 10w USB power adapter so you can charge the iPad through any electrical outlet. Now you're all set to make an uninterrupted run on the Dig Dug World Record!

I would imagine your nerd boner is at full mast, especially with the Dig Dug reference.  This bad rider can be all yours for a measly $150 from ThinkGeek.  So what are you waiting for?  That dug isn't going to dig itself.

Here are the specs.   [via the daily what]

  • Beautifully retro styled, handcrafted wooden tabletop arcade cabinet and MAME emulator for your otherwise useless iPad
  • Play your favorite arcade games anywhere there's a table
  • Hundreds of games available from various online sources - not included in product!
  • Professional grade arcade stick and microswitch buttons rated for 10,000,000 uses

  • Dimensions: 9" wide x 10" deep x 16" high

NBA Jam For The Wii Still Has Lots Of Fire, Flailing Bodies

Here is the trailer for the revamped NBA Jam that will be heading to the Wii later this year.  It looks an awful lot like the original which is about the best compliment I can give to a new version of NBA Jam.  I must admit, while doing somersault dunks with Kevin Durant looks like a lot of fun, I'm pretty excited about seeing my Tony Danza Mii flying shooting fireball three pointers over Mr Miyagi.

No official release date yet but the facebook page claims Fall 2010.  They're going to have to be changing an awful lot of uniforms by then, as I'm pretty sure that O'Neal/James combo from the trailer won't exist.   [via with leather]

Pac-Man Roomba For Reals

A big part of me wants to want to make sweet sweet nerd love to this video. That's what she said.  Another part of me prays it is not for some class project or anything, and was just done out of a mutual love of doing weird stuff and Pac Man.  Because really, isn't that what life is about?

As a super hella awesome sidenote I'm thinking that Fully Autonomous Ghosts may be the name of my new Smell The Glove side project.  via

New Ryan Adams Label, Music, Art, Tron Review

Ryan Adams is back, and he is busy, and we are all the better for it.  Up above we have the video element of his latest work for The Awl, a review of the arcade classic Tron.  Obviously you should read the entire article for yourself, especially if you like this kind of stuff

As I was takin' a leak, the entire dumpster started to disappear right before my eyes, in a digital glitch type way, and all the particles and glips and beeps and bobs all kind of started to rise up and before my very eyes, as I was looking up into the baby blue fucking sky with white cotton ball USA fucking clouds, those blips and beeps became a swarm of bees. For real (or not, I was tripping).

Anyway all I could do was laugh.

That is totally how I feel about the spider screen. Those fucking spiders come out of the space ice cream cone store in the game and they are just all over your shit.

He will also be appearing in the flesh as the first ever artist in residence at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, where they will also be displaying a collection of his original works.  As for the music, that will now be released via his newly relaunched record label Pax-Americana which now currently offers "Digital Single: #1" featuring the new songs Lost and Found and Go Ahead and Rain. Well, that and the odes to classic arcade games in his reviews.

Ryan Adams Reviews Gorf

Ryan Adams started up his new blogging gig at The Awl with a review of the classic arcade game Gorf, which I have never heard of. Staying true to his prolific roots, Adams couldn't offer up just one medium's worth of review, so we have a glorious written review, and a video review, with footage of the game as well as Adams' patented eye laser effects. So nice to have him back.

The article tends to stray to the place his mind always seems to wander, Danzig.

If people want to be jealous of Danzig, well, that is really just showing their immaturity because even if you are not into metal or gothic post punk stuff I mean, he made DANZIG, the self-titled wonderchild album of all eponymous albums and I bet you if Less Than Zero came out last week with some Gossip Women in there, people would be all over his soundtrack contribution. I couldn't even find that shit on iTunes. What a load of crap. Sweat nuts.

Check out the entire review/article over at The Awl
