New Byrne Documentary Ride, Rise, Roar Debuts

The premiere for the new David Byrne documentary Ride, Rise, Roar premiered at SXSW on Monday.  If the early reviews are to be trusted this seems like it may be the second classic documentary that chronicles some of the genius that is David Byrne.  Of course the other film I speak of is Jonathan Demme's fantastic Stop Making Sense

Part of the reason I wanted to post this is that there is a newish trailer (above) for the film compared to the last time I mentioned the project.  That and the fact that everyone is saying it's awesome. For those that are interested there is also a nice interview by Red Carpet Crash with the film's director David Hillman Curtis that occurred following the premiere, which is included below.

We'll keep you updated with theatrical dates and all that jazz when they become available.  Head on over to the film's official site for some more background and other goodies.

Beck's Record Club Takes On INXS

Unfortunately Beck is being greedy and not letting the interwebs embed the video where it wishes, but you can still head over to Vimeo to check out the latest from the Beck Record Club.  The new album getting the treatment is the 1987 album Kick by INXS.   This of course is the album with most of the big INXS hits you remember, New Sensation, Devil Inside, Need You Tonight, and Never Tear Us Apart.  Definitely going to be fun to see how this ones handled.  Joining Beck this time around are St. Vincent, Liars, and Os Mutantes.

The first track off the album is Guns in the Sky which you can check out right here.

Uncool update: The video has since been made private.  I'll update this post when it's back.

Jeff Austin And Brendan Bayliss' 30db Announce Album, Tour

When we last checked in with the supergroup of sorts 30db, there were really no details about anything.  The only awesome that really existed was a nice streaming studio tune called One Man Show.  Now we have some good info, and it reeks of awesome.

First comes first, the track we previewed was indeed the title track as the album will officially be called One Man Show.  Currently the record is scheduled for a May 11th release and will be supported by some actual tour dates, as opposed to the one-offs they are used to like tonight's show at Schuba's, or next week's appearance at Jam In The Dam.

While all of their public appearances until now have only featured Austin and Bayliss, the album and subsequent tour is going to be a little more crowded ........ with awesome.  Let's get some history from the official bio

Hailing from Chicago, longtime friends, musical collaborators, and all-around conspirators Jeff Austin (of Yonder Mountain String Band) and Brendan Bayliss (of Umphrey's McGee) have been writing music and playing together for years. In between their busy tour schedules with Yonder and Umphrey's, the two musicians had always wanted to start a band. They wrote some songs, played some shows (both on Jeff's turf in Colorado and back home in Chicago) and so 30db was born.

After accruing a mass quantity of music, they decided it was about time to make a record. They recruited an amazing crew of musicians to join them in Boulder for some recording sessions, and that's when 30db really took its shape and became a band. Holding down the sound on drums is the Memphis-based North Mississippi Allstars drummer and co-founder, Cody Dickinson. E-Town host and legendary guitar player from Hot Rize, Nick Forster, plays electric guitar, and Boulder-based Eric Thorin keeps it tight on the bass. The final product is a collection of heartfelt tunes, filled with fun yet ironic lyric undertones and solid playing from start to finish.

Yes please and thank you.  We even have some cover art.  Rock.

Tour dates for the band's newly announced mini-tour are below with presales beginning March 22nd at 1PM local time.  Head on over to the official 30db site for all the mania you can handle.

Also, add an LA date.  Thanks.

Zach Galifianakis And Fiona Apple Up In Them Guts

Sorry to double dip on Chad Farthouse today but it happens.  This song is apparently from 2006 but somehow it has eluded me for all this time.  It's a song by Zach Galifianakis called Up In Them Guts that features his friend and sometime music maker Fiona Apple singing the unbelievably great hook, "If you show me your fanny pack, I'll show you my fanny".  We also get to learn a little something about what the British people call a fanny.

For those that don't remember this isn't the first time Fiona and Zach have been kicking it together.  The video for Not About Love from Fiona's excellent Extraordinary Machine features Galifianakis lip-synching the entire song, with passion.  You can check it out below for a refresher if you are so inclined.

Also, Fiona, how about a new album?

Umphrey's McGee Visit Street Date Studios

Here is the video from Umphrey's McGee's recent visit to Street Date studios to perform two tracks off of Mantis for a small studio audience. The band chose the rocking 1348 to start things off and then the poppier side of Umphrey's gets displayed with Made To Measure.  I'm certainly not going to make the case that this is the best recorded Umphrey's McGee you can hear out there, but it is a good quality video recording and new and by god it's St. Patrick's Day.

You can also check out the "Day In The Life" video the band made from their visit to NYC that day that features some Reelin In The Years as well as the band prepping their cover of Lisztomania by Phoenix.  Rock.

Phish Announce Summer Tour Dates

Phish finally unveiled their Summer Tour plans today with a nice video featuring some synchronized swimmers and of course a Mr Jon Fishman.   Following up last year's plan to play cool venues, this summer sees the band make a 3 night stand at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley from August 5th-7th, followed by the long rumored Telluride shows at Town Park on August 9th and 10th.  The tour also includes a two night stand over 4th of July Weekend in Alpharetta, GA.

No word yet on any end of summer festival possibilities but I have heard rumors of a return to Indio as well as no return.  How is that for insight?  We'll keep you posted on any new dates that may spring up but for now you best get to your lucky charms and get your ticket orders in.  The presale lottery will be open until March 26th at 11:59 PM EST so head on over there whenever you are feeling lucky.

Listen To Phish Cover Genesis From The Hall Of Fame

As we reported yesterday, Phish performed at last night's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony.  The band opened the show with their cover of the Genesis tune Watcher in the Skies.  After an extremely heartfelt, albeit it music geekified induction speech from Trey, the members of Genesis that don't go by the name Peter showed up to receive their award.  Maybe I'm the only one that thought this but it appeared that Phil Collins was a bit surly and definitely too cool for school as he awkwardly drummed on the podium with his hands and left the stage after he was finished talking while other bandmates tried to speak.  Classy guy.

Anyhoo there really is no good video that has surfaced yet and I am hoping to not have to be the one that does the conversion myself because I am lazy and eagerly awaiting some tour dates that are about to come out.   You can check out the audio from yesterday's performance below, in order.  First tune is Watcher in the Skies, second tune is No Reply At All.

Also dear Phish, please add these to the rotation.  I'd like to hear No Reply At All on the lawn in Berkeley this summer, thanks.
